Holden Gallery Submission

Cathleen Meadow :  Photography

My practice involves the investigation of nostalgia and sentiment, dealing with old age and memory. These images are of a mock up of a Japanese stab bound book I made containing found images and text, mirroring the fragility of age with my choice of binding.
The text is a collection of extracts from residential care home sample menus such as : "sultana sponge" "smoked trout" "red cherry pie"... I wanted to turn something that has no poetry at all into something poetic. I want to link the institutionalised environment of a care home to a real person with real feelings.
The book is small & delicate measuring only 3.5 inches square. I wanted to explore ideas of routine and repetition, using small sections of the same image repeated throughout the book. I would like to transfer this work to wall based images. I plan to have prints framed, single images window mounted on pale white mount board (as I want the materials I use to reflect the subtlety and sensitivity of my work) with a text caption (from the care home menu) window mounted underneath within the same frame.

Below is a link to a video of the book.
